The Kita Family Branch was founded by a samurai named Takasaki who moved to Nonoichi in 1686 and started manufacturing and selling kerosene. The name over the generations was Jihe Aburaya. From the middle of the 19th century, the family changed the business to brewing and continued until 1971.
In 1891, there was a big fire in Nonoichi, and most of the Kita residence was burned down. The family bought a house from Sobe Taiya, a soy sauce manufacturer in Zaimoku-cho, Kanazawa City, and relocated it. The side of the house facing the street was approximately 13.5m on the 1st floor, and 11m on the 2nd floor, which was large for a house in town. The facade had thick latticework and wing walls on the 2nd floor with thin Kaga lattice on the 1st floor. Entering the house, you see a long earthen floor (tori-niwa) with a large room on the left side (oe). The oe is 9m deep and 3.6m wide with a wooden floor and large fireplace.
The space above the oe and tori-niwa is open, and a combination of large beams can be seen. In the far end, there are a tatami room and tea room from which you can see a beautiful garden.
The characteristics of the building suggested that this was built in the early 19th century. This is the oldest town-style house in the Kaga region, and was designated a national important cultural property in 1971. In addition, many documents detailing the relationship between Higashi Honganji Temple and followers in Nonoichi Village from the Edo Period (1603-1868) to the early 20th century remain. These documents include letters from the lord of Kaga Domain, which are designated cultural properties of Nonoichi City.
