South Area 34

The area name, Yahagi, comes from the fact the many residents were engaged in arrow making. Yahagi in Japanese means to make arrows. In 1486, when the priest Doko climbed down Mt. Hakusan and stayed overnight in Yahagi, he composed a tanka, a Japanese poem with thirty-one syllables, regarding the area.
Yahagi became a part of Nonoichi Town in 1955. Although it was once a farming area, currently condominiums, stores, and companies occupy the area.
Fujioka Suwa Shrine protects Yahagi. The shrine was originally called Suwa Shrine; however, it was renamed Fujioka Suwa Shrine in 1880 because Bando Fujioka, a vassal of Togashi Clan, really respected the shrine. In 1901, the shrine incorporated Hachiman Shrine. In 1982, a new main building was built.
