South Area 28

In 1345, Takauji Ashikaga, founder of Ashikaga Shogunate, assigned Ujiharu Togashi as Jito, (medieval land steward) to the area. The current area name, Shinjo, is thought to have come from this old name. It was merged into Nonoichi Town in 1955.
This area has been protected by Sugawara Shrine. It is said that the shrine was established before 1150. In 1906, it incorporated Hakusan Shrine located in the same village. A stone-made Sho Kannon statue and a wooden Kannon statue are housed at the shrine. It is rare for a shrine to house Buddha statues; and this is evidence of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism at the time.
