South Area 23

Excavations conducted at the Kambayashi Shinjo Sites between 1990 and 1995 covered a total area of 40,750m2. Settlements that existed from the beginning of the 7th century to the end of the 9th century were found. Uncovered were 85 tateana (pit-type) dwellings and 54 homes with posts dug into the ground. While only two pit-type dwellings and homes with posts dug into the ground were found in the area of settlements dating from the beginning of the 7th century, seven to eight houses were found in the area of settlements dating from the end of the 7th century. After the late 8th century, houses shifted from pit-type dwellings to those with posts dug into the ground. The large amount of artifacts unearthed during the survey include a bellow tuyere (ventilation duct), scrap iron, and iron products such as small knives and nails, which show that the people living here were engaged in making iron products.
There is no doubt that the area from Kambayashi to Shinjo was occupied by settlements. The settlements, which appeared in the early 7th century on the west side of the Kambayashi Shinjo Sites, expanded rapidly from the late 7th to 8th century. This is thought to have been because the country's ruler conducted intensive development through the rulers of each region.
